Dermaplaning: An Instant Glow
Getting out in the beautiful San Diego sun and surf is great for your mental health, but not so much for your skin’s health. These external elements as well as aging unfortunately contribute to fine lines, wrinkles, and a dull overall complexion. In our youth, our skin has no problem maintaining collagen production, a key protein that supports, hydrates, and improves the skin’s elasticity. While you can increase collagen production through dietary supplements like collagen peptide powders or using collagen-rich skincare products, a great way to boost your skin’s elasticity and resilience is by manual stimulation. Derma rollers, facial massage, and dermaplaning all stimulate collagen production, however, there are other benefits to dermaplaning in particular.
During the procedure, your esthetician takes a blade (similar to a scalpel) and literally shaves your face, removing debris, dead skin cells, and pesky peach fuzz: essentially an extremely thorough exfoliation. You will immediately notice a much more luminous and glowy appearance. It also causes your skin to go into a “healing mode” and produce the collagen necessary for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. This healing process takes about 3-4 days, so be sure to use gentler facial products in the time following your dermaplaning appointment. Because it is such an efficient exfoliation, it also prevents acne and breakouts caused by dead skin and oils getting trapped in your pores!
Another benefit of dermaplaning is better absorption of your topical skincare products, better makeup application, and improved results of other procedures you may have. It is recommended to have dermaplaning done every 4-6 weeks in order to maintain your results, but you can have it done as often as every 2 weeks.
